when a man goes missing and is found buried in a backyard. >> but first, a weather alert tonight. cold air is invading central florida. we could see some of the coldest temperatures this season. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm lisa bell. >> i'm erik von ancken in for matt tonight. this cold blast comes after a front brought strong and severe storms over the weekend. probably woke you up. we were here with you on air and all night and all morning. tonight, what a difference. this is a live look from the beach cam. the last bit of sunshine now is keeping temperatures from falling fast. that's about to happen. our chief meteorologist tom sorrells is pinpointing our forecast tonight and in the coming days. >> we've cleaned up the radar nicely. you don't see any radar echoes anywhere in florida. i mean, anywhere. we expand to the islands of the bahamas, nothing doing. cloud cover, yeah, we've watched the cloud cover peel away in the last 24 to 48 hours. it's pushed along with the front. there are lingering clouds behind.

upper-level clouds are not doing a whole lot for us, except for making a spectacular sky and maybe holding on to the heat about that much. that's it. temperatures across the southeast are cold. it's 22 in nashville, and 33 in charlotte. in atlanta, 31. 50 in jacksonville. pensacola, down to 53. we've tumbled to 55 across the core of central florida from leesburg, orlando, kissimmee, sanford, new smyrna beach, all at 55. gainesville, 51. it's 57 in cocoa beach. the on-the-town forecast for tonight will drop on down to 49. before you know it, by 11:00 tonight, we should be down to 44 degrees under a mostly clear sky. i'll be right back to pinpoint the overnight low where you live and talk about how much warmth we can gather back in here tomorrow and show you how much colder we're going to be tomorrow night than we are on this night. >> see you then, tom. thank you. >> as the cold blast strikes central florida, news 6 is

to street level. news 6 meteorologist candace campos is traveling city by city tonight and joins us live right now from flagler county to help us prepare. >> well, what a day it's been. we hit eatonville, sanford, de land, deltona, and now we're up here at palm coast. we're as far north as we possibly can be for the time restrictions of the show. from the moment we left orlando about 4:00 to now, the temperatures are really dropping. tom's going to talk about how cold it's going to get. even colder conditions later on tonight. while we were driving up here, we got our push notification from our pinpoint weather app. our favorite, tom sorrells, sending out the lows tonight in orlando, about 40. in ocala, he says down to 33 degrees. up here in palm coast, it looks like temperatures are going to be dropping back into the mid-30's. you'll want the extra blankets tonight or make sure to wear the flannel. let's look here at your pinpoint

here in palm coast. temperatures are going to be dropping into the low 40's very quickly tonight. look at wake-up temperatures by tomorrow, 8 a.m. as you get your kids and self ready for work and school, 35 degrees. by 10:00 tomorrow night, like tom has been talking about, the weather is going to be even colder. so get ready for two very chilly nights. again, back live out here, the temperatures continue to drop as the sun starts to lower as well. a little behind-the-scenes, though, i do have my hand warmers. i brought these from my trip up north. these are meant for skiing, to put in your gloves, but it works at least for tonight. >> and you can warm up now on the drive home. thank you so much. >> tonight we're digging deeper to get results on why the noaa weather radio channel went offline during the nasty storms

>> it's the sound of static from 2:45 sunday morning until 9:00 sunday night. the radio channel for the orlando area not functioning as heavy rain hit central florida with a tornado watch. many of you were relying on those radios to keep you informed. the national weather service says their equipment was not the issue but rather a phone line owned by verizon and serviced by at&t. at&t sent us this statement saying, in part, "due to a hardware issue caused by another provider, the nws says it verizon's equipment." another option to get the updates and warnings during severe weather, search wkmg in your app store and you can download our free pinpoint weather app. it will give you access to realtime radar anywhere in the country. lake county. a homeowner reported missing and backyard. deputies say a neighbor called them last night to report they hadn't seen the 61-year-old dennis jones in a month. deputies went to check on him at

in paisley last night. this morning, they found human remains buried in his backyard. that's where we find news 6's eric sandoval tonight. he was the first reporter on the scene on there today. where did detectives find jones' truck? >> deputies actually didn't even tell us about this truck. we found it about two blocks away in somebody's yard. evidently, it had been abandoned. deputies, though, were guarding it to make sure that any clues that were in there were preserved. you can see behind me deputies are also guarding jones' house tonight, making sure nothing is touched. >> i just wonder what's going on. >> grace mcwilliams lives just a couple doors down from this house where dennis jones lives. she told us she had no idea deputies had discovered human remains buried in his backyard. >> i didn't know nothing about it. >> other neighbors tell lake county sheriffs investigators jones hasn't been seen in more

they worried what may have happened to him. jones made headlines three years ago when he was arrested for driving under the influence in his own driveway. investigators say he was so drunk, it took him 15 minutes to back out. this was his mugshot. now, some neighbors are trying to make sure deputies talked to jones' girlfriend who they say moved into this house with him. >> i asked her, "where did you come from?" being nice. she said she lived right here. i said, oh, with dennis then? she was like, no, he's gone. he'll be back later on. >> neighbors tell us the girlfriend also drove jones' truck. we found the truck in the front yard of jim gorton this afternoon. he told us, it was abandoned in the middle of the road last night. he helped pushed it to his property out of the way. tonight, the question is where is jones? and was he buried in his own backyard? >> human remains have been found and the medical examiner is on scene and working closely with

remains. >> now, we asked deputies about the girlfriend and the truck. they would not talk about the girlfriend much, but the truck they did confirm was his. as as john harrell said from the sheriff's office, it's up to the medical examiner to determine whether the body was jones' or not. >> thank you, eric. >> an orlando family is on edge tonight. police say masked men stormed into their home in an apparent mistaken home invasion just after midnight. we're told they threatened a mother and her two children inside. moments after they forced their way in, the suspects realized something wasn't right. she begged the men to spare her life. >> the guy was in the kitchen and they said kill the baby, kill the baby. i hovered over my baby and i

i heard the ones in the kitchen wisper something and backing out with their guns and said don't look at me, don't look at me. i said i'm not, i'm not. >> we're working to find out more details about a crash in eatonville. police say a car hit a pole and a tree outside a church last night. the building was not hit or damaged. investigators say nobody in the area heard anything. police are still searching for this driver. >> fire officials in lake county are still investigating what sparked a fire that destroyed a citrus plant in leesburg. today, sky 6 flew above where the building used to be. left. cell phone video from saturday night shows how intense the flames were. it took dozens of firefighters control. no one was hurt. we're told the business sells fuel so firefighters had to work quickly to stop the fast-moving explosion. now the state fire marshal is

>> and in celebration of martin luther king, jr. day, hundreds of people gathered in orlando to honor a local man who made civil rights history. >> the 25th annual arthur pappy kennedy prayer breakfast was held today. here's more on orlando's first african-american elected official. >> for 25 years now, hundreds of people have come out to celebrate the life and legacy of an orlando civil rights pioneer while at the same time recognizing the message of dr. martin luther king, jr. >> dr. vickie kennedy johnson say memories of her grandfather never fade. >> what i also remember about pappy kennedy, he never met a stranger. >> nearly a thousand people attended the annual prayer breakfast to honor him. >> he was the first elected

in 1973 and re-elected by an overwhelming majority in 1976. many call him a living example of what dr. king had hoped to see. >> he was a hero in the community. it's a legacy. it's a great legacy. >> he did make a pathway for those of us who are here to go on. as you notice, we have a lot of african-american commissioners, both city and county. >> pappy kennedy's influence helped the local naacp branch and meals on wheels and several parent teacher organizations, civil rights advocates, paving the way for change. >> what he was in public was the way he was in private. to me, that's a lesson that you really can't teach. by words or by lessons. you have to live that. >> organizers say they hope kicking off this day with a breakfast helps inspire people to follow the true message behind m.l.k. day to help and serve the community. >> thank you.

>> we continue to follow breaking news. the death of eagles' founding member and guitarist glenn frey. they released a statement a short time ago. it says the 67-year-old suffered from complications stemming from several illnesses, including rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia. we'll continue to update you clickorlando.com. >> non-stop flights between orlando and vancouver started for the first time today. westjet is offering the flights. the two-flights-per-week service lasts through the end of april. vancouver was the largest site in north america without flights to orlando until this year. >> the cold blast has many of you bundling up as the temperatures continue to fall. >> news 6 anchor julie broughton is with us now. a lot of people are digging to the back of their closet to find all of those coats and scarves.

>> thank you, julie. >> my biggest problem is i can never find my hat. i have one hat that i pull out every time it gets cold and i put it in a pocket in a coat and can't remember where it is. >> what about your earmuffs? do you know where those are? >> i don't have those. the cold weather is coming to us thanks to a front that brought us severe weather early sunday morning. we were keeping you safe through alerts through our pinpoint weather app. >> the weather radios were not working. news 6 at 7:00 is asking why the weather radios failed to alert during sunday's storms and we'll look at back-ups that can help protect your family if it happens again. huge concern. we had a threat for tornadoes across central florida. at a time when people really needed that, it wasn't there. >> we talked about the '07 tornado outbreak when they didn't sound through parts of lake county.

it's an area where the signal it's an area where the signal didn't go in strong enough so it didn't touch it off. >> this is a different situation where something actually went weird. >> one more reason to be watching you during severe weather. >> if you're awake. that's the problem. it's 2 a.m., 3 a.m. >> people are sleeping and unaware. >> they're not watching. we were here, though. look at the radar. we've gotten rid of most of the cloud cover. a thin veil of cloud cover out there tonight. to the south, you can see the clouds build in in south florida from miami to the florida strait and the keys are getting cloud cover in here, but just a little smattering of clouds on the backside of the cold front. that's all we've got left. radar tonight, obviously not a lot of cloud cover and the cloud cover that we have, not packing any kind of rain. it's just a thin shield of clouds at a high elevation. >> tonight, lows this morning, winds with -- with winds like this, we dropped to these temperatures.

tonight we're going just about 3 or 4 degrees colder than that. we rebounded today to a daytime high in orlando of 61. the overnight low this morning again was 43. put that up against the averages there and we're obviously 10 degrees below average in orlando for the daytime high and 6 degrees below average for the overnight low tonight. we'll go about 9 degrees lower than average, not near the records, of course, but still plenty cold if you have to be outside. daytime highs across the area, 59 did it in daytona beach. 61 in melbourne. and 59 up there in gainesville. right now, we're off the mark of our daytime high of 61. back down to 55. and a large part of the area, from new smyrna beach to sanford to orlando, the villages, leesburg, ocala, all at 55. still 57 in cocoa beach. we're 2 degrees colder right now than we were last night at the same time. so we're pacing on down about 2 or 3 degrees colder, which would mean an overnight low tonight of 40 in orlando.

this wind continuing to funnel in here from the northwest. here's the breakout for tonight. a thin shield of cloud cover down south. but there's no big cloud cover and no big rain coming our way either for days. it will be friday before that changes. as cold as we get tonight, we'll be even colder again on wednesday morning. i'll show you that overnight low for orlando in just a moment. tonight we drop to 37 in de land and we're going to 38 in sanford and 33 in ocala, 35 in bushnell and 34 in the villages and 36 in leesburg. 40 in kissimmee and 44 in cocoa and 40 in titusville. the low in orlando, 40. here's tomorrow. >> we bounce back tomorrow to a daytime high of 58. the low tomorrow night is 38. that's in orlando. that means you in ocala, you know what that means. you're going to freeze tomorrow night. 63 is the high tomorrow on wednesday and thursday's high is
